For most people shooting your weapon accurately doesn’t come naturally. The reality is is that it is an acquired skill that needs to be practiced. If you are a novice shooter the best course of action would be to visit your local shooting range and be taught properly and safely by an instructor. For the rest, it is always helpful to have a friendly reminder about how to improve shooting technique. Long Beach Shooting Range

BRASSLong Beach Shooting Range

Having a repeatable process is the key to achieving success in just about anything. For shooting accuracy that process is BRASS. BRASS is an acronym for: Breath. Relax. Aim. Squeeze. And finally, Shoot. Don’t rush through the steps, focus on each individually and take your time. As a result, you will be more focused and your aim will improve.

Don’t Pull The Trigger – Squeeze

If you haven’t been taught proper technique chances are that you have a tendency to pull at the trigger instead of squeezing it. Pulling the trigger is a jerking motion that causes your weapon to be pulled off target. However, squeezing the trigger is a smoother process that helps your weapon stay on target. Long Beach Shooting Range

Practice With Dry Fire

Dry Fire is a technique used when you want to practice your shooting form and do so without wasting live ammunition. Practicing with live ammo causes your firearm to recoil. The recoil makes it hard to see how your alignment was effected when you pull the trigger. With no recoil during a dry fire you can easily detect if and how much movement occurs. But first, be sure to check your weapon’s manual to make sure that it is okay to dry fire.

You may notice that the barrel of your weapon dips after your first shot. This can be attributed to flinch or anticipation and consequently needs to be avoided if you want to consistently hit the target with multiple shots.

The Single Shot Drill is an easy drill you can try to eliminate flinch. To do this, load a single round into your weapon and remove the magazine. Fire your shot as normal, stay in form, and squeeze the trigger for a second shot . Since there is no more ammo the second shot will not go off and you can monitor your site for dipping. Repeat this drill to work on your follow through.

Muscle Memory

Muscle memory is essential in achieving consistency. The simplest way to do this is by practicing as much as possible. Practice enough and your muscles will memorize the correct technique and form. Long Beach Shooting Range
