When you shoot your pistol, residue begins to build up over time.  In order to keep it in proper working condition, it is important to clean it.  This can be a time-consuming task, especially for new gun owners but it is an essential one.  LAX Range, a Long Beach shooting range, shares the fundamentals of cleaning your pistol.

This very detailed video carefully explains the entire process from start to finish.  A gun that is considered to be your everyday carry weapon needs a more thorough cleaning than a firearm that you just use for fun on the range.  This is because your life depends on your everyday carry glock, and therefore it needs to be in the best condition possible.  For a thorough clean, this entire process should take 10-15 minutes from start to finish.

Step 1: Remove the magazine and ensure the chamber is empty.  This is an essential first step for your safety and anyone else in the surrounding area.

Step 2: Perform a field strip of your weapon.  This includes removing the slide from the base of your weapon. Be careful not to lose any small parts.

Step 3: Remove any oil and lube residue from your previous cleaning from all parts of the firearm.  Clean with q-tips until the q-tip comes back mostly clear of gunk and residue.

Step 4: Spray the barrel with Rem Oil (Remington Brand) and let it soak for up to 3 minutes.  This will help to break down any built-up residue and make it easier to remove in later steps.

For the remaining steps in the everyday carry cleaning process, watch the video above!
