To master long range shooting, first, you need to identify key components, easy enough. However, to mastering each component will require dedicated practice and it would help to have an experienced long-range shooter help you out. Try asking the staff at our LA and Long Beach area shooting range to help you with each of these components.

Fit Your Rifle

Accurate long-range shooting absolutely requires that your rifle is fitted to yourself. The consistent attachment between you and your weapon is essential every time you bring your rifle to your shoulder.

Adjust Your Ocular

You, not someone else, should be adjusting your ocular since your eyepiece is dependent upon you. For best results, focus the reticle on a blank wall or at a clear blue sky.

Align Body With Scope

To maintain consistent accuracy, align your body with your scope. Squarely position your body directly behind your stock. This position will absorb any recoil from your first shot without changing your position for a follow-up shot.

Properly Mount Your Scope

Don’t take this seemingly trivial tip for granted. Make sure that the reticle is precisely horizontal. If it isn’t, you will encounter a lot of problems between your aim and the actual trajectory of your bullet.

Compensate For Wind

Mastering shooting in the wind is going to rely a lot on intuition, but there are plenty of tools to help. Use the tool available to you, but practice, trial and error, and learning from your mistakes will be the best way to master windy long-range shooting.

Relax Your Body

With all shooting, one of the first things you are told it how to control your breathing. Your body is most relaxed at the bottom of your exhale and serves as a reference point for all the shots you take. Remember not to hold this position, fire the shot immediately to avoid being to tense.

Follow Through

Your shot isn’t finished once you pull the trigger. For the brief moment after you pull the trigger, stay still. Maintain your position until your shot strikes the target.
